The department offers a range of activities aimed at broadening your understanding of the practical and contextual aspects of this subject.
Most options are aimed specifically at art and design students wishing to acquire specialist knowledge in a particular field or to engage with art and architecture at first hand. However there are occasions when a student from other subject areas might benefit from the activities and can participate if given permission from their tutors.
We offer a range of skills based workshops reflecting the specialist subject areas of the staff in the department. These run during the first term.
Art Foundation students are given a series of talks from visiting speakers from various universities. These include admissions tutors, course leaders and other representatives from Art and Design departments.
There are often opportunities for placements with Vanity Fair magazine assisting in photoshoots or work shadowing the art director.
Trips and Visits
Following on from our successful trips to London, China, India, Morocco and Thailand we are once again organising a three day residential visit to London in October as well as an exciting opportunity to visit Thailand in February giving all students in upper and lower sixth as well as art foundation the opportunity to participate in one or both of these activities.
Local visits may vary according to what exhibitions are on, for example some exhibitions at ‘Drumcroon Art Centre’ and the Manchester and Liverpool galleries are more appropriate to our students than others and so our use of the galleries varies accordingly.
In the autumn term we organise a trip to Clothes Show Live in Birmingham and often go on drawing and research days throughout the year.
We endeavour to offer you ways to become fully involved in the subject beyond timetabled lessons. This may in turn give you the insight you need to make more informed decisions about your future.
