There are opportunities for students to experience competitions, visits, lectures and a range of other enrichment activities offered by the department.

One highlight of the year is a spectacular ‘flash and bang’ lecture presented by a lecturer from a local university.

Last year AS students represented Winstanley College in Young Analyst Competitions held in Manchester, Liverpool and Preston.

Visiting lecturers from local universities and industry provided useful up to date information about chemistry related degree courses and employment opportunities in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

The department organises visits to local university laboratories so that students can gain experience using infra-red spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy.

The Royal Society of Chemistry organises an online Olympiad and provides support forums to highlight and inform students of the importance of research and wider reading.
